+ Our
old gas radiant heaters have been condemned - what can we do?
+ Our old electric radiant
heaters are on their last legs - what can we do?
Most churches and heritage buildings are notoriously
difficult to heat. If you warm the air, for example with radiators,
the warm air will rise to the ceiling where it is of no use to
occupants. Furthermore, if such buildings are used only intermittently,
it can take hours or even days to take the chill off. Another
concern is that if an ancient building is overheated, damage may
result to the structure of the building. It is the opinion of
the Wall Paintings Conservation Department of the Courtauld Institute
that quartz halogen infra-red is the least damaging form of heating
for churches where there are ancient wall paintings. Our experience
has been that because short wavelength infra-red is not heating
the air to the extend that other forms of heating do, drying-out
problems are reduced or eliminated.
In some cases, electric heating may be the only
option for your church or heritage building because of the non-availability
of other kinds of fuel or the absence of a water supply. In many
instances, decision-makers are encouraged by the fact that electric
heating is comparatively inexpensive to install. With SunSwitch,
it is also likely to be much cheaper to run. SunSwitch combines
instant warmth with low, calculable running costs. And no waste.
There are various types of electric heating available.
For example, off-peak storage radiators, under-pew convector tubes,
wall-mounted convectors, fan assisted, and radiant overhead heaters.
SunSwitch Quartz Halogen heaters are a relatively recent development
and are the only practical alternative to the older style radiant
overhead heaters. We recommend they should always be installed
at an angle of about 45°, since when pointing straight down,
they tend to heat the tops of heads, but not much else!
Wherever visual appearance is paramount,
we would recommend the use of SunSwitch Heritage Series heaters.
In all cases we would recommend the use of SunSwitch voltage regulators
so the heat output can be fine tuned. All of these products can
be viewed and orderd from our heritage products
page.
Where a convection system, such
as a radiator circuit, already exists, it may be viable to still
use it for background, low-level heating (e.g. frost and damp
protection). SunSwitch heaters can be added for comfort heating
when the building is occupied. This will enable the existing system
to operate with greater energy efficiency, while providing the
added luxury and economy of short wavelength infra-red.
Older type quartz halogen heaters,
and inferior models that do not use the advanced Philips element
tend to emit a red glow that may be found unacceptable. SunSwitch
heaters, on the other hand, emit an off-white pink light that
is generally found very welcoming and can be easily supplemented
with existing lighting.
