At last - heating that makes animal husbandry easier Kennels and Catteries Many kennels and catteries are still unheated, while those that are may be using inappropriate heating technologies. These are just like a 'beefy' dimmer switch, except that when heat is turned down, they also save energy. Birthing Traditionally, so called 'pig lamps' are used to provide heat for rearing. These use infrared (infra-red) bulbs which are similar in appearance to a PAR38 spotlight bulb. The main problem with pig lamps is that the output is so low that the lamps have to be placed very close to the animals. This also means that the lamp may be placed in a position where the bulb is at risk of being knocked by the birthing mother. For birthing, we recommend SunSwitch infrared heater as a better alternative. The heat output is much greater, so the heat source can be placed further away, creating a larger pool of warmth.
